Excursion from Tangier to Lixus archeological site
We will pick you up from your accommodation and drive to the archeological Roman ruins of Lixus. The site is located by the city of Larache, a coastal city 90 km south of Tangier, which is almost an hour and a half away. Our drive to the city will give us the possibility to visit Asilah, a beautiful town of former Portuguese fortification. Its old town, or medina, is enclosed by well-preserved 15th-century ramparts and gates, built by Portuguese. The medina is an art hub, known for its murals and Moussem Culturel International d’Asilah… (contact us for more details about excursion to Assilah).
If you are interested in archeology and history, it is worth to visit Lixus, which is an ancient city founded by Phoenicians before the city of Carthage, its distinguishing feature is that it has been continuously occupied from Antiquity to Islam, and its remained-vestige date from the Phoenician, Punic, Mauretanian, Roman and Islamic periods. The site shows us a complete Roman ecosystem of houses, fish factory, temples and even a beautiful amphitheater from which to contemplate the sunset. There are beautiful well-preserved mosaics that have been protected since they were discovered.
Subsequently, our trip will take us to Larache which was founded in the Middle Ages. The history of the town talks about Portugal, Spain and Morocco. Therefore, the influence of its colonial past is reflected in the architecture of its buildings. You will enjoy the city with a walk through the blue and white old quarter, observing the current Moroccan way of life in a medium-sized city. You can have a tea or eat near the port and see how the boats leave and enter the open sea and how the current changes flank. After so, we take our way back to Tangier. Drop you off at Tangier.
