Day Trip from Fes to Ifran, Azrou and the surroundings
The city of Ifran is nestled beneath the slopes of Middle Atlas Mountains. It is considered to be one of cleanest cities in the globe. This geographical location along with its architecture made of this town so special and all year around destination to go-to.
This adventure will take us to discover the main attractions of Fes surroundings. Within our journey we will cover the main natural sites, historical background as well as to uncover the secrets of Morocco’s cultural diversity. We will take you on a full-day trip through which we will explore small towns, a rolling landscape of cedar forests and peaks as well as we soak up the European feel of Ifrane, sometimes called the ‘Switzerland of Morocco’. Our day trip will lead us to descend to the Berber market town of Azrou to find the monkeys that thrive in nearby groves of cedar trees. This day trip goes off the beaten path to find Morocco’s quieter, rural side.
For those with few days in Fez, short day trips are a great way to take you away of the hustle and bustle of Fes. The usual destinations are Meknes and Volubilis, however today we would like to suggest another town in the Middle Atlas, Ifrane.
After the breakfast, the driver will pick you up from the hotel by 09am. We will travel across Sais plain which is one of the fertile country fields. As soon as we advance in the road, we will see the first slopes of the Middle Atlas Mountains in the horizon, then we start going up the winding road. Our first stop will be at the small town of Imouzzer, which is known for its apple festival in September. This area is known as one of the major producers of apples in the country.
Our journey continues to Ifrane, developed by the French during the protectorate era for their administration due to its Alpine climate, this Moroccan town has a remarkable European style. Because of its elevation, the town experiences heavy snow during the winter but very cool weather during the summer. The lowest temperature in Africa was recorded in Ifran -24 °C in 1935. After Ifrane, we go ahead with our trip to the cedar forest where animals to be found in including the threatened Barbary Macaque. Lunch will be in the town of Azrou. Around 03pm we take our direction back to Fes. The driver will escort you back to the hotel. End of our services.
